In response to the news that a domestic helper was found to be HIV positive after being employed in Hong Kong which sparked fierce debate among Hongkongers, the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation would like to, again, point out that HIV is a fragile virus and its survival is indeed extremely difficult outside the body or when it is exposed to the external environment.

Please remember: Casual contacts such as shaking hands, kissing, sharing toilets, using drinking fountains, eating together, going to school together, working together and cooking will not transmit the HIV virus. We also need to emphasize that HIV cannot be spread from an HIV-infected caregiver to infants and adults through vast majority of daily activities and casual contacts. HIV will only be transmitted through certain routes (please refer to our official website for a more detailed explanation: https://bit.ly/2Hy6zal ) As you will find out, there is no cause for undue alarm in this case.

We hope to remind everyone the importance of safe sex and encourage everyone to take HIV test as part of a regular medical check-up, so as to prevent HIV infection.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact our AIDS helpline 2513 0513.
