The risk of passing on the HIV virus to others will hopefully be completely eliminated by effective drug treatment, namely highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), reported by a landmark study recently. The research result also proved that an “Undetectable = Untransmittable” level could be achieved with HAART and good drug compliance.
Over the course of the eight-year study, nearly 1,000 gay couples (with one partner who is HIV positive and has been undergoing HAART) found no new cases of transmission to their HIV-negative partner via sex without a condom. The report, published in The Lancet medical journal in early May, reported that using HAART to suppress the virus to undetectable levels can eliminate HIV transmission via sexual behavior.
We are thrilled to hear this good news as this is the one of the most in-depth pieces of medical research to firmly conclude that people living with HIV who undergo HAART and maintain good drug compliance can reach an “Undetectable = Untransmittable” level and be fully capable of not only enjoying a good quality of life, but also not infecting others . That said, still, prevention is better than cure. We hope to remind everyone of the importance of safe sex and encourage everyone to take HIV tests as part of a regular medical check-up to prevent infection and the transmission of sexual diseases.
