The Taiwanese pop diva Elva Hsiao has not been seen in public for more than 18 months due to acute bronchitis as some rumors have suggested. Recently, some people even rumored on various social media that she has been infected with HIV. Elva has strongly and abruptly denied this on her Facebook page.

We would like to emphasis that people living with HIV who undergo highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and maintain good drug compliance can reach an “Undetectable = Untransmittable” level and be fully capable of enjoying a good quality of life.

Again, we probably will never know Elva’s true situation but this rumor has brought up a strong message:

As a public figure and a heroin in the entertainment industry who has hundreds of thousands of fans across South East Asia, Elva should not be so abrupt in her denial and we would like to make her aware that HIV is no longer an acute disease thanks to the highly active antiretroviral therapy “HAART” available nowadays.

The fact is, according to the very recent study published on the Lancet, people living with HIV who undergo HAART and maintain good drug compliance can reach an “Undetectable = Untransmittable” level and be fully capable of enjoying a good quality of life. In other words, HIV infection is no longer a death sentence.

Elva’s responses over this HIV infection rumor and the gossip from the public over her health situation have regrettably projected a quite negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS which may be due to their inadequate knowledge.

As an organization who has been fighting to terminate this disease and eradicate discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS, we have to say something to Elva, her supporters and to anyone who is still afraid of HIV/AIDS: Bias against this disease is NOT necessary!

Of course, still, prevention is better than cure. We hope to remind everyone of the importance of safe sex and encourage everyone to take HIV tests as part of a regular medical check-up to prevent infection and the transmission of sexual diseases.

Anyway, we hope Elva will get well soon!
