The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health released the latest figures on the HIV/AIDS situation in Hong Kong from January to March as of 2024. A total of 105 additional cases of HIV infection were reported from January to March (1st quarter of 2024). This figure represents an increase of 10 cases compared to the previous quarter (4th quarter of 2023: 95 additional cases). In total, the cumulative number of HIV infections has reached 12,143 cases.
According to the CHP reports, of the 105 new cases, 83 were males while 22 were females. A total of 61 cases (58.1%) were acquired the infection through homosexual or bisexual contact, and 24 cases (22.9%) through heterosexual contact. The routes of transmission of the remaining 20 cases have yet to be determined due to incomplete information. Thus, sexual contact remains the major route of transmission regardless of their sexual orientation.
In view of the upward trend in the 1st quarter of 2024, Hong Kong AIDS Foundation appeals to the public to use condoms consistently and properly in reducing the risk of acquiring HIV, and to undergo regular HIV testing. The brand-new HKAF Mong Kok Service Centre has commenced services this month. The Centre offers a variety of services, including free Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services, emotional support and counselling services, educational talks, volunteer training and activities, group activities, as well as events and promotional campaigns.
